Single Review: Gwen Stefani – ‘Baby Don’t Lie’

2 min read

The rumours surrounding singer/fashionista Gwen Stefani have finally been confirmed; the starlet is gearing up for the release of her long-awaited third solo album in December, her first since The Sweet Escape in 2006. Stefani has been busy wrapping up the album while she has been coaching on the current season of The Voice USA, and she has confirmed a new No Doubt record being in the works, where does she possibly find the time?! That’s her secret, but in the meantime she has treated the world to her comeback single Baby Don’t Lie and its official video, and it’s got ‘hit’ written all over it.

Gwen Stefani-Baby Don't LieA bass line with attitude and some hand claps introduces the track with confidence, before long the signature Gwen pop kicks in and we are reminded of what she’s about; she’s not afraid to delve into the mainstream pop world, and if you have followed her career since Love. Angel. Music. Baby, then you are familiar with that aspect. Some finger picking of the guitar leads us into the wicked reggae influenced beat, the sound produced could easily become a club favourite; Gwen’s voice is as unmistakable as ever, she owns every note and every word. The lyrics are mostly repetitive and not so complex, but the overall vibe of the track discounts that factor.

Baby Don’t Lie has the star quality to excite fans for Gwen Stefani’s return to her solo career, it’s catchy and sparks the fires of anticipation; though it follows the same pop formula concocted on her previous solo work there’s an edginess to this particular track, you could say that it can come off as a Solo Gwen/No Doubt crossover, if you give their previous album Push and Shove a listen you might agree. Yet another hit for Gwen Stefani!
