Single Review: Ellie Goulding – ‘Goodness Gracious’

England’s sweetheart Ellie Goulding has released her latest pop anthem which is set to be a huge success. Goodness Gracious is the sixth single from her album Halcyon and the extended re-release Halcyon Days. Each of these six singles, from her debut Anything Could Happen to latter number one hit Burn have topped charts around the world and Goodness Gracious will be no exception.
This single is exactly what we have come to expect from Ellie Goulding: a fun pop number, with catchy lyrics that you can’t help but sing along to and an infectious dance melody. What is unexpected though is that the lyrics are quite dark: ‘Loosened the noose then let go of the rope/I know if it’s never coming back it has to go.’ This is interesting when you look at the happy and vibrant dance melody. The music video also features dancing, smiling faces and neon lights, once again marking the strong contrast with the lyrics. Ellie said that she wanted the music video to be bright and bold, so as to not focus so much on the negative thoughts implied by the lyrics.
However stark this contrast might be, it works well with the catchy and lively track. Goodness Gracious is another one of Ellie Goulding’s songs that you can’t help but fall in love with, and will be a perfect addition to your summer playlist.
