Single Review: Calvin Harris – ‘Outside’ (Feat. Ellie Goulding)

There seems to be no stopping Calvin Harris. His reign as one of music’s biggest superstars is set to continue with the brand new hit, Outside with Ellie Goulding. The pair have proved their sizzling musical chemistry with I Need Your Love, so enlisting Goulding seems to be the right move for a chart-topper. Outside is the fifth single from his much-anticipated album Motion, due for release at the end of October.
Ellie Goulding is no stranger to featuring in big EDM tracks. The reason why she’s such a popular pick would probably be due to her distinct vocals. Goulding brings an airy, almost childish element to accompany the pounding bass – and it’s a great contrast. Once again, Harris weaves his magic throughout the track; the song starts off soft with Goulding’s dainty falsetto and plucking synths. True to Harris’ style, the chorus climbs with a clapping build before breaking off to an explosive bass drop. It’s all sweeping synths and booming beats, bringing those euphoric festival vibes despite the bleak tone of the lyrics. ‘We did everything right, now I’m on the outside’, Goulding laments, over dramatic and swooping melodies. But it’s the sort of song that won’t make you feel sad; in fact, quite the opposite as it elicits memories of smokey nights and bright lights.
Once again, Harris and Goulding triumph with this killer of a track. We can’t wait for the rest of the album – which will feature big names including Alesso, Big Sean and Tinashe. Outside teetering on pop but still holds that distinct EDM sound – the perfect combination to sing and jump along to. With it’s big beats, catchy hooks and that added star power from Goulding, this track has proven that Harris is only getting better and better.
