Single Review: Bruno Mars – ’24K Magic’

1 min read

Bruno Mars has dropped a new single, 24K Magic, from his forthcoming album also called 24K Magic. The retro funk hip hop hit is a surefire party starter that will get the house bouncing.

Bruno Mars - 24k Magic24K Magic was written by Mars, himself, along with Christopher Brown, a member of the music production troupe 1500 0r Nothin’, and Philip Lawrence, member of Mars’ own song writing and record production group, the Smeezingtons. The production of the track is the work of Shampoo Press & Curl and The Stereotypes.

Musically, the funk style is derivative of Uptown Funk, Mars’ hugely popular collaboration with Mark Ronson. Mars’ vocal delivery is reminiscent of the late, great, Godfather of Soul, James Brown, and the breakdown has a stark Kendrick Lamar influence. Having said that, the track is meant to be about feeling good, being in the moment and living the life, so if Mars picks out all the good bits in trending popular music and gives us another serving of what he has proved he does so well, is it all that bad?

In Bruno Mars’ words “You can call it my first single, but I call it the invitation to the party.” And that’s precisely what 24K Magic stands for.
