Single Review: Plan B – ‘Prayin’

Following the mammoth number single She Said, from sophomore album The Defamation Of Strickland Banks, London rapper-turned-singer Plan B’s new single, Prayin’, hits the shelves this week and its a cracker of a track.
The third single to be taken from one of 2010’s biggest records, Prayin’ is the next chapter in concept record which tells the story of a man who finds success before losing it all after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit.
The song branches away considerably from the work we heard from the Londoner on his debut, the 2006 record Who Needs Actions When You Got Words, which uncomfortably pigeon-holed the rapper into the hip hop only genre. With his latest record, in particularly with Prayin’, Plan B has transformed himself into a soul crooner laced with jazz stylings, capable of holding his own in the charts and successfully taking a new direction musically while still drawing inspiration from his hip hop roots.
Plan B is a guy that can frankly do no wrong with releases that have seen the singer catapult into the UK’s eye line. Prayin’ is a bittersweet, vintage, soulful track and it’s songs like this that will keep Plan B accustomed to number one singles and critically acclaimed records if future releases are of this quality and calibre.
