Single Review: Travis – ‘Where You Stand’

2 min read

When the news broke that Travis front man Fran Healy was to get back together with his old band mate chums to put down some new pennings for a brand new studio album, the music world seems to let out a sigh of relief. Although Healy ventured into solodom with the release of his debut solo record, 2010’s Wreckorder, things have been relatively quiet on the Travis front over the past few years, making their 2013 return to music a welcomed one.

TravisWhereyouStandWhere You Stand is set to be the bands seventh studio album and is scheduled for release in August but it is the title track that we have recently been offered as a teaser ahead of the parent records unveiling.

The new track opens with the same signature piano led, tambourine scented instrumentation heard on a lot of previous Travis releases so has an instant nostalgic feel to it. We also find further familiarity when Fran enters the number and pours his distinctive vocals, along with a series of chorus falsetto moments, over the number, reminding us of songs form the bands hugely successful 2001 The Invisible Band release.

Where You Stand is an invigorating and lyrically touching and optimistic (lines like “lift me up or tear me down, I’ll stand right up again”) return to the forefront of the international stage for the Scottish quartet and provides an injection of promise ahead of the bands forthcoming studio album release.

Where You Stand acts as a testament to Travis’ continued relevance and longevity within the music industry, not just throughout the UK, Europe and Australasia but also in the US where they have just announced a highly anticipated headline tour. The track is an amalgamation of old school Travis and just the right amount of mainstream to give the number its musical crispness as the band continues their reign as one of Scotland’s most celebrated exports.
