Single Review: Tony Bennett & Delta Goodrem – ‘Steppin’ Out With My Baby’

Bennett is back…again! That’s right, the American crooner who somehow keeps going and going (he was born in 1926) takes to our airwaves once more and this time he’s brought former Neighbours star and pop starlet Delta Goodrem with him.
Bennett has a penchant for being able to gain new audiences without really reinventing himself; it’s probably the timeless quality of his music and voice, stretching over generations and allowing new people to discover his music from scratch. That’s exactly what this track is good at, introducing the youth to something they may not have heard before.
For many people Steppin’ Out With My Baby is an old classic, first sung by Fred Astaire way back in 1948. What Tony Bennett does here with it is take a more jazz standard stance to the song, and enlists the help of Delta Goodrem on vocals to make it more interesting and current. The song works well and as you’d expect from a Tony Bennett song, the musicianship is wonderful. The song comes into life with a creeping bassline reminiscent of Ray Charles’ Hit The Road Jack before Tony and Delta’s vocals kick in which work very well together despite the obvious age gap. At just under two minutes, it’s short but sweet and does the job which it sets out to do, showcase Tony Bennett for a new audience.
If it can get even a few new people interested in another style of music over the sometimes stale and churned out X Factor pop scene, then Tony’s done well.
