Single Review: La Roux – ‘Uptight Downtown’

Back in 2009, synth-pop duo La Roux released their self-titled debut album, which birthed several internationally successful singles including In for the Kill and Bulletproof, and won them a Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album.
Five years later and La Roux returns in the form of a solo act as Elly Jackson debuts the new single Uptight Downtown from her upcoming second album Trouble In Paradise, set to be released next month.
The long awaited new single is just what you’d expect from the energetic red-head – full of poppy synth beats and her smooth, defined vocals. The track has a bit of an 80s pop vibe which lingers throughout the song which was written about the Brixton riots, but is modernised by Elly’s effortlessly cool and edgy presence.
The song sets the bar pretty high for the rest of the album which will be a highly anticipated and welcome return for Jackson. La Roux has always had a way of creating songs which captivate the listener and hold them interested the whole way through, which is part of what gained them such a large following of fans with their debut album. The new single indicates that Jackson will be making it up to fans for taking such a long time between records with another hit – as they say, good things come to those who wait.
