Single Review: Jessie J – ‘Thunder’

2 min read

A question still ponders me when discussing Jessie J: What genre of music does she fit into. Pop, RnB, Dance? The answer is most likely all of them. That all gets disregarded and becomes irrelevant  however, as one thing is for sure, Jessie J has one hell of a voice, and Thunder is yet just another example of how far the 25-year-old Londoner can stretch those vocal chords.

Jessie J ThunderEvery type of high and low is exemplified in Thunder, a performance in itself where Jessie J has the sound of something to prove almost. Thunder is the third release off her second album Alive, two years after her debut Who You Are. I think we can replace the word song by changing it to anthem. Thunder is a very powerful piece of music, a visionary sound with thunderous beats over brilliant vocals by Jessie J.

She is one of the UK’s shining lights in terms of raw talent and ability, and in my eyes she could even make a Justin Bieber track sound wondrous, not to be cynical of course. With an 80’s vibe and religious undertones somewhat hand in hand, Thunder sees Jessie J at her most comfortable, happy to utilize her outstanding voice belting out a note or two. She reminds us all that yes, she might take a break here or there to appear on judging panels to comment on upcoming singing talent, but it’s just a reminder that in terms of her own talent, not many can judge.
