Single Review: Havana Brown – ‘Warrior’

When dance-pop diva Havana Brown first hit the scene in 2011 with hit single We Run The Night the opportunity to take the pop charts by storm seemed quite promising. The Australian DJ and singer earned her stripes with supporting slots for the likes of Rihanna and Britney Spears and scoring chart success with EP When The Lights Go Out. Indeed, Brown is a woman on a mission to prove herself and new single Warrior is no exception to her quest for pop domination.
“Quit try to shoot me down, ’cause I’m invincible, I think you made a mistake, I am warrior” she sings over a Gaga like verse that builds the mood for a balls to the wall outing. However as ambitious and fearless as Brown may be, Warrior can not escape the mind numbingly basic and frankly annoying chorus that comes after. With a sudden breakdown and Europop siren style synths the song goes from a potentially pumped up track to a boring repetition of annoying honks that tend to occupy the worst of club DJ sets.
It’s danceable, sure, and its obviously suited for clubs where, after a few drinks, it will have everyone jumping around, but Warrior just feels like another track to add to the landfill of unchallenging dance music that current dance acts like Disclosure, Rudimental and AlunaGeorge have been doing well to combat with more substantial and artistic tunes for the dancefloor. If Brown really wants to prove herself, she’s going to have to think more outside the box.
