Single Review: Gabriella Cilmi – ‘The Sting’

Rocking the latest pixie cut trend, Gabriella Cilmi is back to dispose of her sexed-up electro pop image – taking it back to her Melbourne roots with a smoother sophisticated sound.
Unfortunately this new era has been instigated with The Sting – an underwhelming and depressing single, not at all suitable for her established pop audience base. If this is Cilmi expressing her true self, then good on her. But I don’t think many people will be following her down this transformative path.
Australian singer-songwriter Cilmi burst onto the scene in 2008 with Sweet About Me, a super catchy and original track which was number one on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. The album which followed, Lessons to Be Learned which also featured hit Don’t Wanna Go to Bed Now, led to her winning six ARIA awards including Single of the Year and Best Female Artist.
Her second album, Ten, released in 2010 featured pop anthem On a Mission and leaked in more and more of the electro pop style she was playing with in her first album, not to mention a much sexier vibe. It was this vibe that Cilmi wanted to break away from, leaving Island Records for an independent label to produce The Sting.
The Sting is about running from past mistakes and features that smokey Amy Winehouse-like voice Cilmi has, in a more obvious way than what her electro pop songs do. Its slower, it’s contemplative, it’s boring – but then I was a fan of On a Mission. Maybe Cilmi will bring in a new audience with this single. Or maybe, this brooding cautionary tale will fall by the wayside.
