Single Review: Estelle – ‘Conqueror’

After parting ways with Atlantic Records last year, Grammy Award-winning songstress Estelle has made an assertive return with powerful anthem Conqueror. The soaring, triumphant track is the lead single from the British artist’s upcoming album True Romance, to be released via her own label Established 1980 Inc., in partnership with BMG.
Taking a step away from the electronic-influenced RnB sound of her previous efforts (think tracks American Boy and Thank You), Conqueror is a poignant, soulful pop anthem. Although at times musically clichéd, the single effectively showcases Estelle’s talent for infectious hook writing that has consistently been praised by renowned contemporary songwriters, including John Legend. The star of the tune, however, is Estelle’s powerful and emotional vocal performance. Conqueror’s understated production aesthetic allows Estelle’s voice to stand out, evoking uplift and courage particularly in the victorious chorus (I’d rather stand tall than live on my knees / Cause I am a conqueror and I won’t accept defeat).
Accompanying the single is a visually exquisite music video that juxtaposes the strength and the fragility of contemporary dance, which reflects the main themes of Conqueror. We can expect more personal and introspective exploration upon the late 2014 release of Estelle’s fourth studio album True Romance, a body of work centred around passion, courage and true romance.
