Single Review: Childish Gambino – ‘Sweatpants’

Following his so far successful career as an actor, Donald Glover a.k.a. Childish Gambino has established himself as a rapper releasing two albums in the space of two years while securing support from devout Hip Hop fans. His latest single Sweatpants from recently released album Because the Internet hits back at all the haters questioning his integrity as an artist with endless pop culture references to keep you up to date with the latest trends and slang.

Childish Gambino - SweatpantsTo every good rap song there’s usually a solid beat. This quality beat sets the scene nicely for Gambino’s energetic rapping on the musicians latest single effort. Coming from a background in comedy it feels like he’s doing stand up over a beat. He goes on a verbal rampage questioning rappers and tearing down the misconception that he grew up rich and doesn’t know any better.

The song is steeped in rap jargon and references that I was unfamiliar with before hearing them slung through this single but once I figured out what they meant it came off as fairly witty. You really see the writing prowess Gambino has for his genre.

The chorus sums up the intent of this song when he says “don’t be mad cause I’m doing me better than you doing you”. He puts down everyone that has the opinion that he shouldn’t be where he is now, brushing his shoulders off like a champion at the top of his game.
