Single Review: Aretha Franklin – ‘Rolling in the Deep’

Let’s not waste any time here. The legend that is Aretha Franklin has just released the debut single from her forthcoming album and just quietly, it is pretty amazing! The much-loved Soul Sista has covered power songstress Adele’s Rolling in the Deep, catapulting our senses into a blissful euphoria of sonic heaven.
Teaming up once again with long time pal and heavyweight Sony music executive Clive Davis, Aretha holds nothing back in her interpretations of some great diva classics. Rolling in the Deep is just as raw and full of emotion as the original but Franklin has masterfully made it her own by delivering trademark vocals that are a little huskier and a little raspier than they used to be but still just as powerful and effective.
The production quality too leaves nothing for the wanting with more upfront vocals, a heavy, driving beat that hooks you in immediately and of course a healthy helping of Motown magic. It’s the arrangement however, that really solidifies the greatness of this cover. Just when you think it can’t get any better, the song launches into Motown classic Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, which is not only thrilling and spine tingling but also feels incredibly natural, as if Adele wrote it in herself.
At 72 years of age the affectionately named Queen of Soul continues to reign supreme over her younger contemporaries who quite frankly, couldn’t hold a flame against Rolling Stone’s number one Greatest Singer of All Time. With 18 Grammy awards in her pocket and more than 75 million albums sold worldwide this incomparable talent shows no signs of stopping any time soon. Long live the Queen, I say. Long live the Queen.
