Tennessee born starlet Lauren Pritchard has been making waves in the UK this year with a round of successful festival appearances, headline dates and comes equipped with a set of soulful, pop hits from her upcoming album, Wasted in Jackson. Between a busy schedule of touring and promoting the forthcoming release we caught up with Lauren to find out what makes the vocal beauty tick and here’s what she had to say.

Brendon Veevers: How are you doing?

Lauren Pritchard: Good!

BV: You’re about to release your debut album Wasted in Jackson – can you tell us a little about the record and what we can expect?

LP: Wasted in Jackson is an honestly written record about the past couple of years of my life, which include moving to a new country, a bad break up and all the shit in between.

BV: What’s the meaning behind the title?

LP: Jackson is my hometown in Tennessee and it was really important to have something pertaining to it in the title. It’s home and I love it, but it’s also a very small town where everyone knows everyone. It drove me insane when I was younger and needed to branch out and see something new, it’s what kick-started this whole journey and I wanted to pay homage, say thank you to it in more ways than 1 cause I love it and I’m thankful for that place.

BV: How would you describe your sound?

LP: I call it pop/rock/soul music. It’s Al Green, stroke Sheryl Crow, stroke The Fugees. stroke Joni Mitchell (does that make any sense?).

BV: Who inspired you growing up?

LP: Some of the biggest were, Aretha, Steely Dan, TLC, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell, Eminem, 2Pac, Dolly Parton, Radiohead, Ryan Adams (my list could go on forever I think).

BV: You’re from Tennessee but you left your hometown to pursue your musical dreams, what brought you to London?

LP: I came over to work with songwriter/producer Eg White, initially it was just to write a few songs together (I wasn’t signed at the time) but It turned into making an album together. So I moved over and have stayed since.

BV: Your MySpace site says that you moved to Gotham City out of a love for Batman – is Batman your guilty pleasure?

LP: YES. Batman is my favorite superhero, always has been, always will be. And I think Christian Bale is the best one of them all.

BV: What’s your creative process and what part of the process do you enjoy most?

LP: I enjoy all sides. I think there is a time for writing and a time for performing, they need to ebb and flow, and for me it comes and goes in waves sort of like the seasons.

BV: Going back to your record – is there a track you favor the most on the album?

LP: One of my favorites is a song called Try A Little Harder. I like the message of the song, I also love it cause it’s the only song you can hear Eg sing on. It’s only one line in the song, near the end, but it always makes me smile to hear that moment.

BV: I caught a snippet of you at Latitude Festival over the weekend and the reception you received was amazing. Do you find the reception is the same back in the US?

LP: The reaction has been great in both places, I wasn’t sure what to expect when we first got out on the road but it’s been a welcoming experience, I feel lucky to have gotten that so far.

BV: You’re on the road promoting the album. How do you find touring?

LP: I LOVE IT. Nothing beats touring, and I HATE when it stops.

BV: What’s next for Lauren Pritchard?

LP: The album Wasted in Jackson is out October 18th in the UK and October 26th in the US so I’ll be doing a lot of back and forth between the two gigging my bum off. It’s coming so soon, I can hardly believe it!!

Lauren Pritchard’s album Wasted in Jackson is released on October 18th.
