Ones To Watch: The Hallows

English alternative pop band, The Hallows, are set to release their single, Angel, on August 26th, alongside their much anticipated debut album, Of Time and Tides.

Alongside Joe Rodriguez (drums) is Sarah Rodriguez (vocals/keys/synth) and Dave Pugh (bass). Together, it’s a sassy triptych that formed in London in 2014 after a decade of hanging out and gigging together.

The vision of The Hallows is to ‘create punchy, atmospheric pop with a big sound’. It’s intelligent, grown-up pop, with erudite lyrics, dreamy melodies, and vocals that are reminiscent of a bit of Kate Bush here, a bit of Tori Amos there.

Unsurprisingly, The Hallows’ musical influences are all the right names. From Motown to Beethoven via your harder rock, they include Nina Simone, Jeff Buckley and Fleetwood Mac (Sarah), Queen, Radiohead and The Police (Joe), and over in Dave’s corner we have The Beatles, Queens Of The Stoneage and Rage Against The Machine.

And Sarah’s CV is pretty rammed. While touring with Hafdis Huld, she supported Paulo Nutini in the UK and France during his These Streets tour; while working at Disneyland Paris she took a turn as Snow White on the Electric Light Parade; and during filming of Will Kevans’ Dialling Tone music video – in which Sarah played piano and also starred Russell Tovey – an extra was ejected from the set for exposing himself by way of an ill-fitting mankini. Whether anyone was offended is yet to be ascertained.

Sarah has also performed live at festivals including Glastonbury, Latitude and SXSW, Joe’s drum skills have seen him added to Odery Drums’ roster of endorsed international acts, and Dave’s classically trained pianist mum can probably take credit for the Beethoven thing.

And after 18 months of the above, The Hallows went into Riverside Studios in Bath to put down the debut album, Of Time and Tides, alongside producer Seb Pecchia (Robert Plant’s Mighty Rearranger). Mastered by Andy ‘Hippy’ Baldwin at Metropolis Studios, London, the album is released on 26th August. Look out for the remix of their song Element, produced by Seb alongside Goldfrapp bassist and Grammy-winning Charlie Jones.
