Ones to Watch: Rothwell
Location: Bristol/London, UK
In the 80s we had Madonna, in the 90s Spice Girls and since then we’ve had Adele. All women whose music spoke volumes but whose charisma sealed the deal. And now we have Rothwell, a pretty 25-year-old whose music is brilliant, intelligent and totally cool and who radiates cheeky fun in a way that makes star status surely just a matter of time. Think Rita Ora but with a much better giggle.
The likes of Justin Bieber, Annie Mac and Mista Jam have already picked up on gifted and dynamic singer-songwriter Rothwell, having cut her teeth supporting Justin Bieber on his UK arena tour and after appearances at the Isle of Wight Festival and British Summer Time in Hyde Park, it’s safe to say that Rothwell’s time is now.
Her songs are about heartbreak and love but also about standing up for yourself, no matter what the world throws at you, something she’s more than qualified to write about. And her journey to where she is today professionally hasn’t been easy either. She studied at the College of Music in Leeds – a course designed to teach not only performance but the nuts and bolts of the music industry – but, in time-honoured tradition, she has done her fair share of waitressing and even worked as probably the youngest dinner lady in all the land.
Her break came after she put a video up on YouTube and got a message asking her to come and perform at the legendary London jazz club Ronnie Scott’s off the back of it. Some managers came to see her sing and the whole thing started to take off.
She’s already featured with drum ‘n’ bass artist Metrik on the track ‘We Got It’ and house musicians Toyboy & Robin but makes it clear that she’s only ever featured on songs that she’s co-written.
And with a single out this side of Christmas and another on the other side and an album already in the works, it seems like it’s full steam ahead, with her label Brightstar distributed through Universal.
