News: Nathaniel Rateliff Returns With Brand New Band And Sound

2 min read

(UK) Nathaniel Rateliff, best known for his critically acclaimed 2010 solo record ‘In Memory of Loss’, returns today with both a brand new band and sound. The sparse, melancholic folk of Rateliff’s solo work has grown into a wall-rattling 7 piece soul band; The Night Sweats. Their first release, the ‘Howling At Nothing EP’ is a flawless four track introduction to the group, overflowing with irresistible grooves, unforgettable hooks and churning Hammond organ. It is set for release both digitally and on 10” vinyl via the legendary Stax label on June 29th.

Whilst drawing inspiration from Soul greats such as Sam & Dave and Otis Redding, multi-instrumentalist Rateliff puts his own unique touch on the genre. Upbeat melodies are juxtaposed with the deeply personal and introspective lyrics that have become Nathaniel’s trademark over the years. True to form, he continues to write the often brutally honest lyrics that have already won him a legion of dedicated fans across the UK.

“These songs are about the struggles I’ve had in my life—drinking too much, that kind of crap,” he says with characteristic candor. “And then the relationships we all have. I’m not a great communicator in my personal life, so it’s funny to be writing songs that say the things that I’m never very good at saying.”

The lead and title track of the EP sets the tone, as Nathaniel’s unmistakable voice glides over a sultry groove, all complimented by the skilled harmonies of The Night Sweats. This flows perfectly into the slower, brass led ‘What I Need’ where the unmatched expressiveness of Nathaniel’s vocal takes centre stage.

Next comes ‘SOB’, which the band have been known to segue together live with The Band’s ‘The Shape I’m In’, referencing one of Nathaniel’s biggest influences. It’s a foot stomping party anthem and one that is set to be a highlight when The Night Sweats bring their live show to the UK for the first time in June at Bushstock. This is followed by ‘How To Make Friends’, which provides a subtle yet totally beguiling ending to the EP and a tantalising taste of what is to come from the debut album, due later this year.
