Single Review: Crowded House – ‘Either Side Of The World’

2 min read

Throughout the past 25 years, New Zealand’s Crowded House have gone on to become a musical institution. The band have enjoyed incredible success thanks to the meticulous and unrivaled songwriting talents of front man, Neil Finn. Iconic songs like Don’t Dream It’s Over, Better Be Home Soon, Fall At Your Feet,  Four Seasons In One Day and Something So Strong and the albums Woodface and Crowded House have helped place these gentlemen of radio friendly alternative pop on the international map and have allowed the act to enjoy both critical and commercial success.

CrowdedHouseWitherSideOfTheWorldNow the band are back to what they do so well this year with the release of their latest album, Intriguer. Already described as one of the years most successful summer releases, Intriguer taps back into the sound of the band’s early days to create an album of fresh and pristine nuggets of pure musical gold.

This week we get to take a further look into the album with the release of single number two, Either Side Of The World, the gentle follow up to the April lead single release of Saturday Sun.

Beginning as what sounds like the goings on within a busy jazz cafe, Either Side Of The World carries on the bands effortless radio friendly idiosyncrasy with a gentle ballad taken from the antipodean quartets sixth studio album.

An almost tribal beat glides us into the track before being taken over gently by a subtle tambourine and some eloquent piano cavorting. Finn’s vocals are undated and bittersweet on the track which maintains the same tempo and sincerity heard on some of the bands earlier hits such as Fall At Your Feet and Don’t Dream It’s Over.

Time has been very generous to Crowded House. The lyrical and melodic writing abilities of New Zealand’s national treasure and band founder Neil Finn remain untarnished and in constant succession. The Crowded House sound is friendly on the ears and infectious to listen to and that characteristic is portrayed flawlessly yet again with the release of the bands latest single.

The free flowing vibe of Either Side Of The World makes the single a welcoming appendage to an already immaculate body of work by one of the greatest bands from down under.
