EP Review: Deep Sea Diver – It’s Christmas Time

2 min read

Seattle band Deep Sea Diver’s new four-song EP is full of hauntingly beautiful Christmas tunes. It’s Christmas Time is a compilation of one original song, It’s Christmas Time (and I’m still alive), which is accompanied by covers of Have Yourself a Merry Christmas, O Holy Night, and The First Noel.

deep sea diver Its Christmas Time EPIt’s Christmas Time sounds like the peace you crave in this chaotic time of year. Front woman Sarah Dobson’s voice is angelic as carries you gracefully through every word. Accompanied by cheerful, upbeat, and mildly electronic tunes, It’s Christmas Time is refreshing when compared to the overplayed originals.

While the three covers give a feeling of familiarity and warmth, Deep Sea Diver’s original song It’s Christmas Time (and I’m still alive) feels right at home along side the memorable songs. The original song begins in with a twangy, melodic, and mostly depressing feel, but as the thankfulness for being alive builds, It’s Christmas Time (and I’m still alive) morphs into a catchy, indie pop sensation.

It’s Christmas Time (and I’m still alive) is beautiful to listen to, it’s happiness to your ears as you are accosted by terrible, overplayed carols in shopping centres. With an overall feel of homeliness and familiarity, I could imagine curling up on the lounge, by a Christmas tree and drinking a mug of hot chocolate and listening blissfully to It’s Christmas Time over and over. Except, I think that might work better in Seattle than in Australia.
