Let me start by saying what a treat this show was! If you’re looking for fantastic music, outstanding musicians and an incredible leading lady then you need to see Caro Emerald and her band live!
On Saturday 14th September Caro Emerald made an appearance at the Royal Festival Hall in this legendary venue where many of the greats have sung. Miss Emerald is a wonderful addition to the names of great performers to have graced that stage. Even though the venue is grand and impressive it still manages to keep a relaxed atmosphere which is essential to Caro’s set and although it is such a large venue, there was still a jazz club feel due to the smokey stage and its set up.
When Caro started to sing, that’s when the show really started. Her beautiful voice and elegant style draws you in and immerses you in the music. Whether it was an up tempo song like Liquid Lunch or a slow song such as Completely, her energy captivates you. If you’re looking for a performer who is note perfect and can give you chills, this is the lady. Her voice is smooth and rich; it’s just as fantastic live as it is on her albums. The stage is full of brilliant musicians playing their instruments with finesse and Miss Emerald is no exception, her voice is truly an instrument she has honed and it certainly shows.
During the set we heard the popular songs such as; That Man, Tangled Up and You Don’t Love Me. We also got to hear versions of her album songs, The Other Woman was different to the recorded track and went down a treat. With the great audience interaction Caro got the crowd singing along in no time!
Caro Emerald’s music is loved for its unique fusion of instruments and electronics, its mix of old school class with a brand new twist. Throughout the show we were introduced to various band members and got to see them show off their talent, from the lead guitarist whose smooth dance moves and rock n roll style certainly made him popular with the audience, to the pianist with speedy fast fingers. A real highlight of the show was a band solo where the double bassist and guitarist took centre stage. As soon as these guys started doing their thing, looking around heads were nodding and feet were tapping and everyone in the crowd was clapping along. You also couldn’t miss the male band members in their sharp suits which made up the bands horn section.
Even though The Royal Festival Hall is set in a theatre style and there isn’t much room to dance, by the end of the two hour show everyone was on their feet, singing along and having a great time, including me! It was a lovely feeling to be in such a large room of people all enjoying the talent of Miss Emerald and her band. During her set Caro mentioned that she had always dreamed, and still dream, of being in a James Bond film and went on to sing a Bond inspired song I Belong To You, which was no less than sensational and a very memorable moment of the set.
The night finished on a high with her well known hit A Night Like This, so well in fact Caro returned to the stage to sing four more songs due to the audiences appreciation. After seeing Caro Emerald live I am certain this lady is meant for great things and she’ll continue to go from strength to strength.
