Album Review: Boys Like Girls – Love Drunk

3 min read

Love Drunk is the sophomore album for Boys Like Girls. The band from Boston, Massachusetts are made up of 4 spritely rockers – Martin Johnson (Vocals/Guitar), Paul DiGiovanni (Lead Guitar), Bryan Donahue (Bass) and John Keefe (Drums).

Title track Love Drunk was the first single from the album and did quite well chart-wise – hitting number 22 in the States. A catchy pop song with a lot of guitars and a very similar chorus to The Killers single Somebody Told Me which gained the band a lot of negative criticism. Not what a band wants band you can really hear the similarity.

BoysLikeGirlsLoveDrunkThe boys stick to the same basic template of catchy and hooky teenage love songs mixed with angst and heartbreak for Love Drunk that gained them gold status for their first record.

We haven’t had a lot of dealings with this band over here in the UK. Im not sure if they would particularly go down well – we seem to have had our fill of glossy emo-pop from the likes of Busted and McFly and although these fellas are doing it larger, going through the album I cant help but feel like I am listening to a Busted album – rather Americanized with a sprinkle of country in parts but still nonetheless it sounds very familiar.

Recent Grammy award winner Taylor Swift features on Two Is Better Than One, a mellow track that is all about finding your other half. After Swifts recent sweep at the Grammy’s it would be safe to say that this album has got the push needed to sell well – probably why this number was decided as being single number 2 from the album. It is a highlight to the album to give it its due.

The standout on this record has to be the opening track and upcoming 3rd single Heart Heart Heartbreak. I have to admit that this is a great song. Its got a big stadium feel with a big chorus line and catchy chords. Its also got a bit of the Auto-tune ‘Cher effect’ in its verses.

The closing track Go sees the band rounding the album with an acoustic ballad. With the addition of some strings (the eerie cello opening the song) this one hits the spot and ties the album up into a tight and neat package of pop.

The band are visiting our shores on April 26th for a night at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London so would be interesting to see how these fellas do on the live UK scene.
