Album Review: Nathaniel – Yours

Australian pop/soul sensation Nathaniel has gone from taking on X Factor Australia to the world in the blink of an eye. His smash-hits You and You’re Beautiful were played on virtually every mainstream radio station in Oz. Listeners just couldn’t get away. The singer travelled the globe to put his debut album Yours together and from what we’ve heard it was worth it.
Yours is jam packed with influences from various genres like synth-pop, funk and soul: a decent mix for a popular artist of today that’s for sure. Opening track Animals is reminiscent of Prince and Daft Punk with its funky guitar line and incredibly ranged vocals. The perfect moment to leave the production behind was with emotional ballad and current single Always Be Yours: a very moving performance by the singer indeed.
Bedroom is boppy with a prominent drumbeat and dreamy synths: one of the highlights on the album. Radio hit Live Louder has also been included with its addictive funk backdrop and a melody you can’t help but sing along to. Addicted also leaves an impression with its powerful vocals and club-worthy sound. The deluxe edition of Yours features five extra tracks for your listening pleasure: a touching cover of Simply Red’s If You Don’t Know Me By Now is definitely a highlight.
How did Nathaniel not take out the X Factor title? Yours is truly a reflection of one of the biggest talents to emerge from the series and the Australian music industry. Nathaniel’s vocal game is one of the strongest to grace radio, his knack for writing and delivering pop music is astounding, and his overall sound is addictive. Yours is one of the most decent debut albums brought out by a modern pop star that you’ll find.
