Album Review: Craig David – Following My Intuition

2 min read

It has been six years since Craig David released a studio album and over the past two years he has been building anticipation for a fresh record by releasing teaser tracks on his Soundcloud page. His new album, Following My Intuition, is finally here and it’s not quite what you would expect for David, but delivers nonetheless.

Craig David - Following My IntuitionI would divide David’s Following My Intuition in two parts; the first half of the album seems to be geared to attract a younger audience. It is very much en vogue with what is happening in EDM at the moment, featuring an array of big names on the scene like Sigala, Blonde, and Kaytranada. Ain’t Giving Up and Nothing Like This are distinctive club tracks that will be sure to get people feeling good on the dance floor. The slick and hip stylings of Kaytranda and vocal licks of Lauren Faith are the perfect accompaniment to David’s smooth voice; Got It Good is a stand out track on Following My Intuition in the perfect pairing of talent. 16 features the melody and lyrics of David’s hit Fill Me In from his debut album, sung over Justin Bieber and Ü’s Where Are Ü Now- best mash up I’ve come across in ages.

The second half of the album is more reminiscent of the Craig David we know and love with a more stripped back sound in R’nB gems like What If and Better With You. David’s vocal dexterity is showcased in these tracks. All We Needed is particularly gripping due to David’s heart felt vocal delivery, his controlled melismatic singing style and the hair raising crescendo.

The deluxe version of Following My Intuition (which comes with a hot pink version of the album artwork) includes an additional four tracks; three dance hits, including No Holding Back which features Hardwell, and Sink or Swim, a soulful R’nB number. It’s definitely worth the extra bit you would pay for the deluxe version.

The album in it’s entirety is a bit of a mishmash of genre and style, but I suppose on the flip side, it caters to a spectrum of listeners. One thing that is consistent throughout Following My Intuition is Craig David’s stellar vocal delivery.
