Album Review: Clairy Browne – Pool

2 min read

Australia’s Clairy Browne has arrived with her highly anticipated solo debut, Pool. Infusing slick pop melodies with the infectious attitude of R&B beats, Browne demands attention with her impressive vocal range. From emotive ballads to confident refrains, Pool sees a wide range of styles, but it’s all part of the fun.

Clairy Browne PoolKicking off with a tantalizing tease Vanity Fair, using a slinky melody and a bop worthy beat as a background for her powerful voice, asking the question, “You wanna ring my bell?”. While title track Pool, Callifalling For You and Still Goodbye emit similarly endearing qualities, playing up her vocal prowess for these lyrically emotive tunes, all soulfully belted over smooth beats. Before Clairy Browne kicks the pleasantries and hikes up the attitude a notch with F.U.B, an all-out, atmospheric electro groove. With Browne slipping into Boss-Ass Bitch mode with ease, sassily singing, “Gonna be fucking with your head tonight” / “Fuck you baby, gonna blow you up”. And Killem With It, with it’s infectious electronic beats and attitude, and memorable line, “Boss bitch, an anaconda, watch out, I’m all up on ya” adding fuel to this bright burning fire.

Unfortunately, the mood dulls from here. After such a huge hype, following tracks Birthday Suit, With You and Something Different feel a touch lack lustre in comparison. While nice little pop ditties, they just aren’t as strong as some of her big-boned tunes. But Browne does manage to bring it back home with closing number Spiral, an encapsulating and charming tune that effortlessly blends pop ideals with her soulful delivery. Clairy Browne is sweet, sultry and sassy all at the same time, and Pool is exactly the same. It’s a charming collection of tracks that reflects her vibrant personality perfectly.
